Why South Africa’s China Visit Could Change Its Trade Future

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is in China for an important trip. He is attending the China Supply Chain Expo. It runs from Monday to Friday.

This is one of the biggest trade expos in the world. It focuses on how countries can build strong supply chains. South Africa has been chosen as the guest country, which shows that China sees it as a key partner in Africa.

The theme for this year is “South Africa: Your pathway to supply chain resilience”. The expo is hosted by the Chinese Government and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

What the Visit Is About

The trip is to build stronger ties with China. The team wants to bring investment, grow the economy, and create jobs.

The visit will focus on:

  • Getting Chinese investors interested in energy, pharmaceuticals, technology, logistics, and mining
  • Attracting money for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and infrastructure projects
  • Working with China on green energy, digital skills, and industry standards

This is also part of South Africa’s plan to become a leader in African trade and supply chains.

Part of a Long-Term Plan

The visit is part of a 10-year deal signed in 2020. It focuses on trade, jobs, and industry between South Africa and China.

South Africa wants to play a bigger part in the AfCFTA. This will help African countries trade more with each other.

The Deputy President will also have private meetings with Chinese leaders to talk about projects and future plans.

China has been South Africa’s top trade partner since 2008. Trade between them has grown quickly. South Africa also helps China do business with other African countries.
