A security guard was shot and killed in Chatsworth on Sunday morning. He tried to stop robbers escaping in a taxi after a Bayview robbery. His brave action helped police catch the suspects. The community is now shocked and mourning his loss.
Guard Shot After Confronting Armed Robbers in Taxi
Vikesh Maniram, from Newlands West, worked as a security guard for One Stop Group. He was stationed at a butchery on Lenny Naidoo Drive in Bayview.
On the morning of the incident, two armed men robbed a nearby tote and fled on foot. They entered a passing minibus taxi to escape.
Maniram was alerted by people nearby. He managed to stop the taxi and asked the suspects to get out. It was at that moment that the suspects opened fire, hitting him fatally.

Community Members Caught in the Crossfire
The shooting caused panic in the area. Claude Subramodey from Amawele Emergency Services said stray bullets hit an elderly coupleโs car.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the elderly man was taken to hospital after getting glass in his eyes. The woman was treated for shock at the scene.
The quick spread of gunfire in a public area raised concerns about safety in Bayview.
Off-Duty Officer and Community Help Track Suspects
A Bayview SAPS detective, who was off-duty and eating nearby, saw the shooting and reacted quickly. He chased the fleeing suspects, with help from private security teams and the Community Policing Forum (CPF).
During the chase, one of the suspects fell down a staircase, causing injuries to his head and body. The other was grazed by a bullet in the leg during a second shootout. Both suspects were caught and arrested shortly after.
Community and Police Praise the Fallen Guard
Brandon Pillay, a spokesperson for the Bayview CPF, praised Maniram’s actions and called him a true hero.
“He died a hero. His actions helped capture both suspects,” said Pillay.
He explained that after the robbery, the suspects took a taxi to flee. When Maniram stopped them, they responded with violence.
Pillay said the CPF wants residents to stay alert and report anything strange. He also shared condolences with Maniramโs family from the whole community.
Investigation Underway as Community Mourns
Police have opened cases for murder and robbery. The investigation is still going on.
Pillay said the CPF is urging residents to stay alert and report anything suspicious. He also sent condolences to Maniramโs family on behalf of the community.
“It is a sad day. We lost a brave man who acted to protect others,” he added.
The CPF and local police say they will continue working together to keep the area safe.
