What Caused the Air India Crash?

A report now shows what may have led to the Air India crash. The plane fell minutes after leaving Ahmedabad for London.

The report was released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). It shares what was found in the cockpit recording and flight data.

Both Engines Lost Power Just After Takeoff

The report said the aircraft reached full speed just before disaster struck.

Suddenly, both Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel switches were moved from RUN to CUTOFF. This means both engines stopped getting fuel and shut down.

The two switches were turned off one second apart. Moments later, the plane began to lose height quickly.

Our updates are fast, clear, and fact-checked.

Pilots Seemed Confused in the Cockpit

One pilot asked the other, โ€œWhy did you cut off?โ€ The second pilot answered, โ€œI did not.โ€

This was caught on the cockpit voice recorder. The switches were then turned back to RUN, and the engines began to recover.

But the plane had already lost too much altitude.

Distress Call Was Made Too Late

One of the pilots sent out a MAYDAY signal.

Air traffic controllers asked what the problem was.

Before they could respond, the plane was seen crashing into the ground.

The crash killed 241 people on board and 19 on the ground.

A British passenger survived and walked out from the wreckage.

No One Is Blamed Yet

The AAIB report does not say who is at fault. It only shares facts from the early findings. The full investigation is still going on and may take many more months.

Experts say the focus is now on the fuel switch controls.

Warning Was Issued Years Ago

In 2018, the US aviation authority (FAA) warned of a problem. It said fuel switch locks on some Boeing 787 planes might fail. But it called the issue โ€œadvisoryโ€, not mandatory.

Air India said they did not do checks because it was not required. They also confirmed that all official safety steps were followed.

Boeing and Air India Respond

Boeing said it is working with the investigators. They said their team is ready to help and support.

Air India also said they are fully cooperating with all authorities. The report added that there is no sign of technical failure in the aircraft or engines.

Global Experts Helping in the Probe

By law, India had to submit a preliminary report within 30 days.

Investigators from the US and UK are also helping. The United Nations aviation body (ICAO) is monitoring the process.

Passenger List by Nationality

The plane was carrying 230 people plus 12 crew.

At first, 279 deaths were reported, but later it was 260.

What Comes Next?

The AAIB said they are asking for more records and data. They have not made any safety recommendations yet.

New findings may still change the focus of the probe. Families are still waiting to know what happened.

And experts are trying to understand what really happened in the cockpit that day.
