George Harris, headmaster of Hilton College, addressed a growing concern during sports events. He urged parents to avoid showy behaviour that focuses more on luxury than school values. This came after a derby-day match against Michaelhouse where the sidelines were filled with extravagant hospitality.
In a letter sent to the Hilton community, Harris said the displays were not in line with the spirit of the school. He wrote, “When hospitality becomes a self-serving show of wealth, it misses the point.”
He asked families to show more humility and focus on wholesome support rather than trying to impress others.
Call for Change in Future Events
Harris asked parents to think about how their actions affect students. He said over-the-top behaviour sends the wrong message to young minds. In his words, “Let us ditch opulence for simple, grounded hospitality.”
He pointed out that when luxury turns into overconsumption, the children watching may learn the wrong values. He reminded the Hilton community, “We can do better.”

Reactions From the School Community
Pete Storrar, Hilton’s Director of Advancement, said the letter was meant for internal discussion. He confirmed that many parents and former students supported Harris’s message.
He said, “The response has been mostly positive. Parents seem to agree that humility and community values matter more than showmanship.”
Some outsiders on social media had mixed reactions. A few joked that Harris might be envious, while others strongly agreed with his views.
Public Voices Add to the Debate
One Facebook user said their team once visited Hilton and were told lunch would cost R150 per person, even though it was “prepared” for them. They saw this as a sign of self-focus and excess.
Another comment read, “Good values begin at home. How can children learn kindness if their parents focus on status and materialism?”
Jodi Tarrant-Phillips added, “Wars are happening across the world. Parents must stop the one-upping and teach children to care.”
What Makes Hilton College Stand Out
Hilton College is known as South Africa’s most expensive private school. According to its website, 2025 fees are R430 054.00 per year. This includes tuition, boarding, food, sports, library use, and laundry.
There is also a non-refundable entrance fee of R105 182.50. These high costs have raised public interest in the school’s stance on values and behaviour.
