Minister Blade Nzimande has responded to claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, warning the public to remain calm and avoid political noise.
He said the accusations are serious and deserve a proper investigation. However, he cautioned against political grandstanding, especially as these claims involve high-ranking government officials.
Mkhwanazi Accuses Mchunu of Interference
Mkhwanazi recently accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of disrupting the work of the Political Killings Task Team.
According to him, Mchunu disbanded the unit in March 2025 without permission from national or provincial leaders. He also ordered the removal of 121 dockets, many of which are tied to political assassinations.
Mkhwanazi said these dockets have been left untouched at SAPS head office since then.

Nzimande Calls for Calm and Serious Action
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Nzimande supported President Ramaphosa’s move to speak on the issue. He said the country should wait for the president’s message on Sunday evening.
He added that the nation needs a proper way to investigate these claims and avoid turning the situation into a political battle.
โThis is not the time for finger-pointing,โ Nzimande said. โWe must get to the bottom of this.โ
Mchunuโs Connection to Oupa โBrownโ Mogotsi
A troubling part of the story is Mchunuโs link to Oupa โBrownโ Mogotsi, who is known for his bad record.
At first, Mchunu denied knowing Mogotsi, but later admitted that he had met him. This raised even more public doubt.
Nzimande responded by saying it would be wrong to claim that Mchunu is lying without full proof. โLet the facts speak,โ he said. โThat is what due process is for.โ
Deeper Issues Within the Security Cluster
Nzimande pointed out that South Africa has a long history of abuse within state institutions.
He said that police and intelligence agencies were sometimes used for party politics, especially during internal ANC battles.
He believes this moment could be an opportunity to rebuild trust in public safety. If investigated correctly, the issue might uncover other hidden problems in the security system.
Claims Against the Judiciary Also Surface
Another concern raised was that some judges and magistrates may have been bribed.
Nzimande said the claims should be checked through legal steps only. He also warned the media not to assume anything too soon.
โLet the courts and investigators do their work,โ he said.
A Personal Reflection on Surveillance
Nzimande shared that he was once targeted during the Fees Must Fall protests.
He said intelligence agencies watched him and tried to find faults, but failed. He believes this shows how power can be misused to silence people.
Did Nzimande Confront Mchunu?
When asked if he spoke directly to Mchunu, Nzimande said he had not.
โWe are colleagues,โ he said. โBut I have not asked him what is going on.โ He added that Mchunu has promised to speak at the right time and he hopes that happens soon.
Opposition Parties Take Action
Following the claims, the DA, MK party, and the EFF have opened criminal cases against Mchunu.
They accuse him of misleading Parliament and working with individuals who may have tried to capture the police service.
