The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is staffed by university faculty members and offers six levels of intensive English language training to prospective university students, professionals and the general public. Each of the levels, from General English 1 (Level 1) to English for Academic Purposes 2 (Level 6), offers a full curriculum of reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar, as well as other courses. Students may begin study in one or more of six enrollment periods.
Course placement is based on institutional TOEFL test scores and on diagnostic testing given at the beginning of each term. A combination of class grades, writing assessments, teacher recommendations and TOEFL scores determine movement through the curriculum. Beginning students generally require five to six terms at CESL to meet the standard for general admission to SIUC; one to two terms are usually sufficient for advanced students.
All courses include instruction in grammar, pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Other courses offered include novel/film, news discussion, presentation skills, academic skills, notetaking, research paper writing, and American culture. Organized extracurricular activities such as picnics, parties, and field trips are included. Students in the upper levels may observe regular university classes.
Upon successful completion of advanced level CESL courses and proficiency exams, students are ready for study in a US college or university.
