 Program Overview   study in america

National College of Natural Medicine's (NCNM) Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) and the Master of Acupuncture (MAc) area four-year programs offering students a holistic approach to the classical teachings of Oriental medicine. The programs were established by classically trained Chinese medicine practitioners and examine the history, philosophy and practices of this ancient approach to healing.

NCNM has one of the few oriental medicine schools offering degrees in classical (as opposed to traditional) Chinese medicine. Graduates of the MSOM and MAc programs are eligible to apply for acupuncture licensure in the state of Oregon and to take both the herb and acupuncture exams administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), which many states use as a basis for licensure.

Above all, the programs are intended to impart to students the holistic spirit of Chinese medicine. The key points the programs will address the culture of Chinese medicine through immersion in scholarly erudition and attention to the multi-layered detail with the "atmosphere" inspiring aspects of holistic life science. The programs will also cultivate respect for Oriental medicine as an independent science that has its own parameters and does not require validation by other scientific systems. As well, each program will foster awareness of the historical development of Oriental medicine, including knowledge of the major schools of Chinese medical thought. In the MSOM program students will learn to effectively treat disease, especially chronic and recalcitrant disorders through training broadly and equally in all major modalities of Oriental medicine, while developing a distinguishing sense when each of these modalities should be applied in various clinical situations.

In the MAc program, the foundation is identical to that of the MSOM program without the herb courses; upper-level courses focus in particular on the clinical application of acupuncture and moxibustion techniques. Three courses were developed specifically for this program - Acu-Moxa Therapeutics I and II, and Chinese Patient Medicines.

National College of Natural Medicine Naturopathic Doctoral (ND) students in good academic standing may apply for admission into the MSOM program by following the admissions procedures described in the Admissions section of the catalog. If accepted into the MSOM program, the dual degree student would concurrently complete both the ND and the MSOM in a six-year combined program. See the Office of Admissions and/or the Office of Academic Affairs for additional information.

 Highlights   study in america

  • The primary distinguishing feature of the classical Chinese medicine approach is that it harvests a practitioner's thoughts on why, when and how a therapeutic modality should be used. The CCM programs were fashioned to reconnect the medicine with its original ideas. MCNM's Classical Chinese Medicine Programs are committed to bringing the true spirit of this ancient medicine into the modern age. We use transmission- and lineage-based teaching methods to provide a solid foundation in the classical arts and sciences of Chinese medicine. Included in the curriculum are innovative courses that provide a framework for understanding advances in modern medicine from a classical Chinese perspective. The college has a first-rate research institute which supports students wishing to conduct scientific research related to their classical interests.

 Admissions   study in america

Students who wish to apply must complete the application form along with US$75 nonrefundable application fee. As part of the application package, students must include official sealed college transcripts for all regionally accredited college and university coursework; catalog course descriptions for all courses that qualify as science prerequisites; two student evaluations and corresponding letters of reference (one from a college or university faculty member, and one from a professional, preferably in a health-related field); a one-page chronological resume of work, educational, and volunteer experience; a Verification of Student Conduct Form mailed or faxed directly to the NCNM Office of Admissions from every regionally accredited college and university attended; signed Criminal Disclosure and Information Consent form; and signed Technical Standards statement.

Applicants who meet the requirements may be invited to an on-campus interview.

All students are accepted for fall entry only. Transfer credit will only be reviewed for NCNM first year courses. Application requirements for International applicants include the requirements outlined above as well as an international student Certificate of Finance. This satisfies visa application requirements by verifying adequate financial resources to cover the anticipated period of study. If English is a second language, submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). NCNM requires a score of 550 on the written exam or 213 on the computer exam. International applicants must submit all non-US accredited transcripts for translation and evaluation to an approved evaluation service. Transcripts from accredited Canadian colleges and universities are generally exempt from this requirement. NCNM reserves the right to require outside evaluation in certain cases.

Expenses and Financial Support   study in america

The National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) understands that further education means a significant investment of time, energy and resources. NCNM participates in federal financial aid programs, including loans and work study.

Financial Aid is available to students enrolled at least halftime in the ND, MSOM, or a combination of both programs at NCNM. All students applying for federal financial aid are required to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. Additionally, students must have been accepted at NCNM. Eligibility for financial aid is determined by using a federal methodology formula as outlined by the US Department of Education. The financial aid awarding process beings in early spring of each academic year, with a priority packaging date of April 30 for need-based aid consideration.

As NCNM is a graduate institution, all students are considered "independent" and are eligible to receive the maximum allowable in federal loans. The subsidized amount received will depend partly on the documented financial need and partly on the institutional cost of attendance for the program chosen. To continue to receive financial aid, the student must make satisfactory academic progress, as defined by academic policies, and must be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for federal aid. The Financial Aid Office advises students and alumni about sources of financial aid and budgeting strategies.

For a detailed overview of the financial aid programs available at NCNM and helpful links to financial resources, visit the website or contact the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@ncnm.edu or 503.552.1616.

Buildings and Facilities   study in america

Located in the Pacific Northwest city of Portland, Oregon, NCNM provides new ways of thinking about not only medicine and health care, but human beings and the world. In September 1996 the clinical education became housed in two clinics several minutes distance from the main campus. The First Avenue Natural Health Center is the primary location for the ND clinical program. The Pettygrove Classical Chinese Medicine Clinic provides primary clinical training for the MSOM program.

The Pettygrove Classical Chinese Medicine Clinic is one of the nation's first classical Chinese medicine teaching clinics, offering acupuncture, qigong, shiatsu massage, workshops, and retail sales of Chinese herbs and medicines. The clinic includes an extensive Chinese medicinary, private offices, and conference and exercise class spaces.

The program is based on the medical tapestry of China during the last 2,500 years, particularly the prescription of herbal formulas, the practice of therapeutic exercises, and the application of acupuncture, moxibustion, and traditional bodywork techniques. The NCNM oriental medicine clinic highlights how classical Chinese medicine brings the legacy of an independent medical system into modern Western practices.
