 Program Overview   study in america

The College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences (CEACS) at Howard University (Howard) offers four-year Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil Engineering (BSCE), Chemical Engineering (BSChE), Computer Engineering (BSCpE), Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Mechanical Engineering (BSME) and Systems and Computer Science (BSSCS) and the five year professional Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch) degree.

The CEACS expects its graduates to make significant contributions to the world's productivity and technological advancement while remaining committed to improving the quality of life for all people. The first two years of study in engineering are similar for all disciplines. Students learn fundamental analytical, design and problem-solving skills needed for more specialized study in engineering. Transfer between Engineering programs is possible in the first two years of study. The core curriculum for the BArch program includes design studio requirements, history and theory courses.

Research plays a vital role within the CEACS and undergraduate students form a part of the college's research community. Engineering students participate in meaningful, cross-disciplinary research while in the undergraduate program and work firsthand with their professors.

The university's co-op program provides students with valuable practical experience. Participants in the co-op program are required to complete four work terms, including two during the summer. Placements are available in both the public and private sectors.

Students enrolled in the architecture program are encouraged to participate in a study abroad, exchange or travel program. Field study is an integral part of the architecture program. Architecture students can also take advantage of the many internship opportunities available to them.

Since its founding in 1867, Howard University has provided students with superb academic programs. Today, its 12 schools and colleges offer comprehensive studies at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels in about 125 areas. A hospital, TV station and radio station are also situated on campus.
   Howard welcomes students from all parts of the world. Its international student population currently represents more than 100 countries and the campus is one of the most diverse in the US. Howard is committed to celebrating the contributions of African Americans; the university was founded to educate newly emancipated slaves and their descendants. Today, it aims to connect students with the past as well as the future; the curricula includes the study of African American achievements in areas including literature, history, criticism and philosophy. Among Howard's alumni are Ralph Bunche, political scientist and the first African-American Nobel laureate, and Toni Morrison, author and Pulitzer Prize recipient.
   Howard has five campuses, three of which are in the Washington, DC area. The 86-acre main campus provides a tranquil, tree-filled setting where most classes are held. The West campus, a few miles away, houses the university's School of Law.
   Howard requires first-year students who do not live with their families to live on campus. On-campus housing is also guaranteed for second-year students, but not for international students.
   Howard is located in Washington, DC, the nation's capital. There are numerous cultural and recreational opportunities in the area including galleries, national museums, symphonies, libraries and sporting events.

 Admissions   study in america

Howard promotes academic excellence through a selective admissions process.
   All applicants to Howard must be graduates of a secondary school or have equivalent credentials, and have taken a college preparatory program including the following: Three units of English; two units of algebra; one unit of trigonometry; one unit of history; and one unit of science. Potential students must also take the SAT or ACT. The minimum SAT score required for the engineering and computer science programs is 1080 total, or a minimum score of 23 on the ACT.
   A completed application must include SAT or ACT test scores, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a $45 application fee, and should be sent to the Office of Admissions at Howard. Most students begin the program in the fall semester.
   In addition to the above, international applicants must be prepared to show proof of sufficient funds for the entire year of studies in the form of a bank statement, financial resources form, and a letter from their sponsor. A conversion chart and the exchange rate is required if the currency is not U.S. Dollars.
   Students whose native language is not English must have a paper–based TOEFL score of 550 or a score of 213 on the computer–based test to be considered for admission.

 Support for International Students   study in america

The Office of International Student Services (OISS) sponsors events and offers special services designed to assist Howard's international student population in adjusting to campus life. OISS offers assistance with immigration, housing, cultural issues and finances.
   A number of international student organizations meet on campus, including the Caribbean Student Association, Asian Student Association, Haitian Student Association and International Student Association. These groups promote diversity on campus and organize social activities for students with similar cultural backgrounds.
 Students who wish to improve their English language skills may attend ESL classes at Howard's Language Institute.

 Buildings and Facilities   study in america

CEACS students have access to excellent facilities and equipment. The college has over 25 laboratories dedicated to relevant research. Notable laboratory facilities include resources for the study of energy conversion, water chemistry, nanomaterials, microwave circuits and computer engineering design.
   The Computer Learning & Design Center (CLDC) provides a full spectrum of computer resources capable of supporting work ranging from computer-aided design to software development. The three CLDC computer labs house both PC and Macintosh computers.
