 Program Overview   study in america

The College of Science & Engineering at St. Cloud State University (SCSU) offers undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in electrical, computer, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering. The Master of Engineering Management is offered through the Manufacturing and Mechanical Department. The programs encourage innovation and imagination among students, and teach them to integrate skills and knowledge. Students benefit from small classes, dedicated faculty members, a high level of personal attention and easy access to faculty, facilities and equipment.

All engineering students must first complete a two-year math and basic sciences curriculum, which prepares them for third- and fourth-year engineering courses. They are admitted to their major program after completing the required courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Along with required science and math courses, engineering students take general education courses in fine arts, humanities or social science to help them understand the effects of emerging technologies on society.

The Bachelor of Science program in Electrical Engineering at SCSU emphasizes computers, circuits, analog and digital electronics, microprocessor systems, digital and wireless communications, solid state devices, electromagnetics, integrated circuit design and applications, control, instrumentation, and computer software development.

The Bachelor of Science program in Computer Engineering at SCSU emphasizes computers, digital circuits and systems, embedded microprocessor systems, computer architecture, computer networking, operating systems, compilers, computer aided design, and computer hardware and software design and development.

The programs in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering draw on faculty expertise in the areas of controls and robotics; thermal sciences, product and process design, materials science and mechanics of processes; automation, production and process planning; CAD and CAM; and optics and lasers. The mechanical and manufacturing graduates possess a thorough knowledge of the manufacturing process - from the integration of systems design and development of manufacturing process to effective forms of communication in all areas of the workplace. This program also provides a base for students to continue with graduate studies in manufacturing, industrial or mechanical engineering, material science, engineering management or biomedical engineering.

The university serves regional businesses and industries through its applied research centers. Priority areas of research in the college include computer control of manufacturing methods, computer modeling, microelectronics, digital signal/image processing, wireless communications, motion control and electromagnetics. Internships and co-op work opportunities are available in both programs. Mechanical and manufacturing engineering majors typically complete the fourth-year design projects in off-campus industrial settings.

University and Location   study in america

Since St. Cloud State University opened its doors to students in 1869, it has evolved into a comprehensive university with a nationally recognized tradition of excellence and opportunity. SCSU is the largest undergraduate university in Minnesota and has more than 15,000 students enrolled in over 120 programs.

A one-hour drive northwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul, SCSU features new facilities, such as the $32.5 million university library, and a faculty that is dedicated to a high quality, practical education. The well-equipped SCSU campus is still small enough to support a closely knit learning community that encourages intellectual and scholarly achievement.

SCSU supports numerous recreational and athletic programs, artistic performances, visiting lecturers and student organizations. Students can participate in over 240 individual clubs and organizations representing a broad spectrum of campus life. Sporting facilities include the National Hockey Center with two Olympic-sized rinks.

Minnesota's fastest growing metropolitan area, the city of St. Cloud serves as the commercial and business hub for over 185,000 people and three counties. Residents enjoy the region's many outdoor recreations, as well as nearby shopping centers and cultural activities. The regional population has steadily grown since 1970, and currently represents almost five percent of the state's population.

 Admissions   study in america

All first-year applicants may apply directly to SCSU. Candidates typically qualify for admission if they graduate in the top 50 percent of their high school class or have the following minimum test scores: composite ACT of 25 or 1140 on the SAT. Students who do not meet these requirements are considered on an individual basis. International students must submit proof of English proficiency (TOEFL) and adequate financial support capable of covering tuition and living expenses. A $20 nonrefundable application fee is expected of all domestic and international students.

Students apply to the electrical, computer, mechanical or manufacturing engineering programs after completing required first- and second-year engineering core courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Courses can be taken at SCSU or transferred from other institutions.

About one-third of all students in the engineering programs are Minnesota residents who completed the required math, science and general education course requirements at community colleges throughout the state. Those entering either program should have a strong aptitude in physical sciences and mathematics, with high school coursework in physics, chemistry and mathematics, including trigonometry, advanced algebra and pre–calculus.

Support for International Students   study in america

The SCSU campus is enriched by a multicultural student body and faculty, and the presence of 1000 international students from more than 80 countries. Hundreds of SCSU students participate in study abroad programs around the world each year. The Center for International Studies (CIS) assists students with academic, personal or cultural concerns, and eases the transition to life at SCSU with a number of unique programs.

Students at SCSU may apply for a special grant that allows international students to pay in–state tuition in exchange for 45 hours of volunteer work per semester. Students can also find part-time jobs at library, cafeteria and department offices.

Buildings and Facilities   study in america

The Engineering and Computing Center provides undergraduate students with facilities for classroom study and research pursuits. The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department is well equipped with advanced equipment in laboratories for Digital Logic and Microprocessors, Digital and Analog Communications, Controls, Analog Circuits and Electronics, Digital Signal Processing, Computer Aided Design, and Power Electronics. All labs are open to all ECE students from 8 am to midnight, seven days a week.

The computers include a network of Sun engineering workstations and PCs. Also, there are a variety of peripherals including pen plotters, laser printers, scanners and hardware development tools. The system software consists of modern programming languages, design and analysis tools, and graphics programs.

The mechanical and manufacturing engineering faculty has designated labs for research in metallurgy, thermal science, manufacturing processes, rapid prototyping and robotics. The departments maintain networked computer systems used for programming, simulation, word processing, Internet access and CAD/Drafting.
