Pratt Institute Sculpture Park to be Included in Fifth Annual Openhousenewyork (OHNY) Weekend Celebration of Architecture and Design
Pratt Institute is pleased to announce its continued participation in the fifth annual openhousenewyork (OHNY) weekend on October 6, 2007 with a new featured attraction, the Pratt Sculpture Park, which is the largest in New York City. The Pratt Sculpture Park, founded in 1999 by Pratt President Thomas F. Schutte and Professor David Weinrib of the Foundation Art Department, is the largest contemporary sculpture park in New York City. At any given time, the park includes more than 50 artworks by both established and emerging artists that are installed across the 25-acre Brooklyn campus. Some of the world-renowned artists who currently display sculptures in the park include Shin Sang Ho, Mark di Suvero, Robert Indiana, Takashi Soga, Gunnar Theel, Philip Grausman, Grace Knowlton, and Allan Wexler. In 2006, Public Art Review, a national journal that explores the many dimensions of public art, recognized the Pratt Sculpture Park as one of the ten best college and university campus art collections in the country. "The wonderful sculpture that has become an important part of our campus enriches the lives of our students and provides an oasis for the general public and the Brooklyn community," said Pratt President Thomas F. Schutte. The Sculpture Park exhibitions are forever revolving and evolving, with a small number of commissioned works; however, most of sculptures remain on the Brooklyn campus for several years. "With its wide variety of abstract and figurative work, the Pratt campus is full of sculpture surprises. Some pieces are attached to buildings, while others might be gracefully lying against a tree," says David Weinrib, who is a sculptor himself, and serves as the park's curator. Pratt Institute is located in the Clinton Hill Historic District of Brooklyn, one of New York's premier landmark neighborhoods, featuring a diversity of architectural styles and beautiful churches. Once called "Brooklyn's Gold Coast," Clinton Hill is distinguished by its large number of free-standing mansions built at the turn of the century by wealthy magnates such as the members of the Pratt family.

Pratt is One of the First Institutions to Accept the "30 in 10" Challenge that Accelerates by 13 Years the City's Goal of 30 Percent Emission Reduction by 2030
At a press conference held today on the Pratt Institute campus in Brooklyn, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and representatives from nine colleges and universities announced a commitment to become a 2030 Challenge Partner and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent over the next ten years. In addition to Pratt Institute, the first nine 2030 Challenge Partners include Barnard College, Columbia University, Cooper Union, all 23 campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY), Fordham University, New York University, St. John's University, and the New School University. At the announcement, the Mayor was joined by Pratt Institute President Thomas F. Schutte; Barnard President Judith Shapiro; Columbia President Lee Bollinger; Cooper Union President George Campbell Jr.; CUNY Vice Chancellor Iris Weinshall; Fordham President Reverend Joseph McShane S.J.; New York University President John Sexton; St. John's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating officer Dr. James Pellow, and the New School Executive Vice President Jim Murtha. "Pratt is pleased to join Mayor Bloomberg in his efforts to battle global warming," said Pratt Institute President Thomas F. Schutte. "As a college of art, design, and architecture, Pratt has a responsibility to innovate and teach sustainable practices and to model the city's sustainable lifestyle through the buildings, interiors, and products our students, faculty, and alumni create."
Pratt Institute is one of the largest colleges of art, design and architecture in the United States and has an administration that is fully committed to becoming part of the solution to global warming. With a large number of faculty members who are already leaders in sustainability, Pratt is well positioned to play a leadership role both nationally and locally by becoming one of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC Challenge Partners. According to Eva Hanhardt, Pratt Institute's Interim Sustainability Coordinator for Academics and Programs, "Pratt is committed to making sustainability central to the way we shape both the curriculum and the campus. Utilizing the talent of its faculty, staff, and students, Pratt is in a unique position to turn its campus and operations into a living laboratory by innovating and demonstrating the best in cutting-edge sustainable design." Anthony Gelber, Pratt Institute Sustainability Coordinator for Facilities and Operations, added: "This fall we hope to complete a preliminary campus audit of greenhouse gas emissions so that Pratt can begin to identify short and long-term strategies to decrease energy usage on campus. In addition, Pratt is looking to make all new construction green and will work closely with the City of New York in developing innovative strategies for retrofitting our existing urban properties for greater sustainability, including historic buildings."
