Hawai'i Pacific University Communication Dean Awarded Scholarship to Writers Conference
Hawai'i Pacific University College of Communication Dean James Whitfield, Ed.D., has been selected as one of five educators to receive a full scholarship to attend the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest, July 27-29, in Dallas.
The conference, hosted by the University of North Texas Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, will host a forum of journalists, writers, readers, students, educators, and the general public to listen to, be inspired by, and discuss literary nonfiction in all its forms with some of the most talented in the genre. Keynote speakers include literary legend Joyce Carol Oates, humor writer Mary Roach, and Allison Hedge Coke, who often writes of her Cherokee, Cree, and Huron Native American lineage. Other featured speakers include writers from The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune magazine, Newsweek magazine, Outside magazine, Texas Monthly magazine, Houston Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, and Sports Illustrated. Dr. Whitfield earned a bachelor's degree in journalism at the University of Missouri, a master's degree in journalism at the University of North Texas, and a doctorate in education at Texas Tech University. He is a veteran of the United States Army and worked as a newspaper editor for several years. Before joining HPU in 2003, Dr. Whitfield had 26 years of teaching experience. He is a nationally recognized scholar in journalism through an award from Kappa Tau Alpha, the National Journalism/Mass Communication Honor Society, in 2002 as "Adviser of the Year." He is a Fulbright scholar, visiting China and Tibet in 2002.

Columbia College Chicago: Columbia Prof Zafra Lerman Wins Peace Award
Zafra Lerman, Ph.D., head of Columbia's Institute for Science Education and Science Communications (ISESC) has been selected to receive the George Brown Award for International Science and Technology Collaboration from The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF). The award recognizes Dr. Lerman's efforts on behalf of peace, cooperation and cultural understanding. She will receive her award and be honored at ceremonies on Thursday, October 11 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Lerman, who founded the ISESC at Columbia in 1991 to enhance science education methodology, has won numerous awards for her innovative pedagogy including the 1999 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. She has also been a life-long peace activist, serving as the primary spokesperson for the American Chemical Society's efforts toward human rights for scientists worldwide. This work has carried the Israeli native to China, Cuba, many of the former Soviet countries of Eurasia and Russia. For the past five years Lerman has brought together the science community of 12 Middle Eastern nations for conferences on the island of Malta. The Malta conferences, titled Frontiers of Chemical Sciences: Research and Education in the Middle East - a Bridge to Peace, enabled Middle Eastern attendees to work together to identify collaborative solutions to critical regional problems. She believes that creating bonds of understanding across cultures and among leaders in the scientific community will ultimately influence political leaders and move them toward diplomatic solutions in the quest for world peace.
