Laws and regulations about smoking in the US will vary from state to state and municipality to municipality.
The federal government currently sets the legal age to buy tobacco at 18 years. Certain states including Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah, as well as some counties in New York, have increased the legal age to 19. You will need to present ID in order to purchase tobacco.
Some cities and states have enacted further restrictions on where and when people may smoke in public. Students who smoke should check the local laws and bylaws for the city and state that they wish to study in.
