School districts in the USA are regions in which all the elementary and
secondary schools are overseen by one board. In most states, the boards are
similar to local governments with powers similar to that of a city. One
exception is Virginia, whose school districts have no taxing authority and
must depend on another local government. In major urban areas, a school
district will be responsible for all the schools in that one city or town.
If the region is one where there are a number of much smaller towns, the
school district may be responsible for and include the schools from
different neighboring towns. Each school district is responsible for
ensuring the quality of learning and the safety of the school environment at
each of the schools in its area.
School districts are one of the major organizations that welcome
international students to the United States and many school districts in the
US run international education programs. International students apply to the
school district's program, and the district then assesses the application,
administers language skill testing, and places the student in the individual
school it deems appropriate.
In this section you can read about school district advantages for
international students, the wide range of programs and study options
available to international students, how to apply and details on school
district homestay programs.
