HOMESTAY PROGRAMS
School district homestay programs involve placing an international student in the home of a American host-family. A host-family offers a private room or space to an international student in exchange for a fee. Homestay arrangements may include only the room, or room and anywhere from one meal to all three meals in a day. Exact prices will vary depending on what's included.

Your school may organize its own home-stay program, or you may also wish to research independent American home-stay organizers. School districts that offer homestay placement may require payment of a homestay placement fee and may also have age restrictions on who is eligible (for example, some school districts will not place students younger than 13 or older than 18, the age of majority in the USA). Students may be required to apply for school district homestay programs, including providing letters of reference. Homestay programs screen families-who must also apply--to make sure that they have the appropriate background and accommodation for taking in a foreign student.

Homestay offers international students attending high school an opportunity to immerse themselves in American life in a safe, supervised and welcoming situation. It also offers the chance to practice English in a day-to-day environment.
