Homestay involves living in the home of an American host-family. Host families offer a private room or space to an international student in exchange for a small fee, which is usually significantly less than it costs to live either in on-campus housing or a private apartment. Homestay arrangements may include only the room, or room and anywhere from one meal to all three meals in a day. Exact prices will vary depending on what's included.
Homestay offers international students an opportunity to immerse themselves in American life. For English Language students, it also offers the chance to practice their English in day-to-day life. For younger students, homestay offers a more secure environment with greater possible supervision and more readily available support than other forms of accommodation. Homestay is often the least expensive of all available accommodation choices.
Your school may organize its own home-stay program, or you may wish to research independent American homestay organizers.
